We seem to be having an issue where various pages have the dir=”rtl” attribute added to the <html> tag when they’re displayed in English. We haven’t seen any consistency other than it never shows up when logged in to the WordPress Admin section (i.e. caching is disabled). It only shows when accessing the site anonymously and only for select pages. If we update a page, the issue goes away – we’re unsure if it recurs for the same page. If we clear all of our site caches, the issue seems to go away temporarily for all affected pages. We’re not using a caching plugin – just WPEngine’s built-in caching. We started using GTranslate in the past couple of months so think there might be a connection. But it’s happening so rarely it’s tough to find a pattern. We host with WPEngine.com and are on WordPress 6.2 with the GeneratePress Pro Version 2.3.1 plugin and child theme active. We didn’t see any reference to a bug like this in the GTranslate WordPress plugin 3.0.2 release, but we updated to that just in case.

We also tested on a computer outside of our agency’s network to rule out any of our network appliances like forward proxies. We also ensured all browser cache was purged before testing. From a home computer, the behavior is still showing on this page:

    https://cob.org/services/environment/climate

Interestingly, the alignment is correct on mobile for the same page though. We tried both portrait and landscape on a phone and it aligns to the left correctly. If we switch the mobile browser to display the “desktop” version of the site, the alignment fails and moves to the right again.

Have there been any other reports of this issue? Any ideas on how we can address it?

We just did a refresh on https://cob.org/services/environment/climate after seeing the alignment issue persist over multiple browser refreshes and multiple systems for testing and it’s now aligning to the left correctly without us changing anything. We’re unsure what’s causing this, but we’re certain it’s still an issue.

    Hi Steven,

GP doesn’t have any control over the issue you are referring to.

Just checked this page https://cob.org/services/environment/climate and everything seems working normally, there’s no rtl attribute in the HTML, the alignment on desktop also looks normal.

Hi Ying – OK, if you’re sure Generate Press doesn’t have a mechanism to change the dir value – even if the page language changes dynamically using the GTranslate language selector widget – then I guess we shouldn’t look into GP further. Thanks

    No problem 🙂
