    Hey all,

We’re working on a couple of monster pages and finally reaching in impasse with editing.

    Generatepress 3.2.4
    GP Premium 2.2.2
    GenerateBlocks 1.6.0

    Happens on
    Chrome 109.0.5414.119
    Opera 95.0.4635.46

We’ve disabled all plugins and the editor is fast. Activating ONLY GenerateBlocks spikes the memory demand from this page from 480mb to 1.8gb immediately. We’ve cleared our caches, changed from Chrome (where we were originally having the issue) to Opera, no change.

To be clear the only plugins active are GenerateBlocks 1.6.0 and theme GeneratePress 3.2.4

Open to ideas on how to get some performance back on the editor. It’s becoming very unstable and we have a LONG way to go.

    Thanks!

    Hi BMM,

Can you try re-downloading and re-installing GenerateBlocks?

The memory demand of GB shouldn’t be that high.

If that doesn’t work, also try installing the release candidate version here: https://generateblocks.com/flexbox-sizing-tabs-accordions-more/

We removed GB 1.6 and attempted to reinstall through the WP Add Plugin screen, but apparently GB has been updated in the repository to 1.7. This is worse for memory demand and now the page is essentially unusable with 1.7. We deactivated all plugins except GP and GB and the page is unloaded. Takes minutes to refresh. When GB is turned off the page loads in less than 1 second.

We’d like to reinstall GB 1.6 if possible, but we cannot find it available and do not have a copy of it.

    Open to ideas.

This is obviously frustrating as our entire page is built with GB and removing it breaks the entire site design. A very scary spot to be in.

    Thanks for any help!

We located GB 1.6 on the WordPress repository development advanced tab and have reinstalled it. We will update as we learn more.

Feedback GB 1.7 essentially broke the page. Not sure on the rest of the site because it doesn’t matter if this page one page is broken. It was taking 2+ minutes for the page to even attempt to load with GB 1.7.

    Hi BMM,

This is really odd. We’re not experiencing such an issue.

Can you provide the link to the site in question?

You may use the Private Information field for this: https://docs.generatepress.com/article/using-the-premium-support-forum/#private-information

    Please see included URL.

The Images you added seem to be the issue. See if you open this one for instance: [removed] – it seems to load relatively slow.

I also tested in PageSpeed Insights and I can confirm that the images indeed are causing the issue: https://share.getcloudapp.com/NQuWkw82

Can you try uploading images with lower resolutions and also convert them to a next-gen format like webp?

You can probably test the loading time first by removing those images temporarily and checking in PageSpeed Insights how it goes.

We will make some changes and look for an improvement as we have a long way to go. Is it possible to remove the url from your comment as this is a staging site and not public and inbound links to this site/page would be undesirable. Thank you for the help!

Switched all images to medium, ran Smush on entire image library. Page still pulling 2.2gb of memory.

Can you try disabling non-GP plugins? Try #1 here specifically: https://docs.generatepress.com/article/debugging-tips/

We did all the debugging tips before starting this support topic. When we disable GB the editor loads very fast.

    Things we’ve done

    – deactivated all plugins except GP and GB
    – changed theme but kept GB active
    – changed browser from Chrome to Opera
    – rebooted computer
    – contacted hosting provider for any speed issues visible on their end
    – cleared all caches
    – resinstalled GB 1.6, no change, but functional, barely
    – installed GB 1.7 breaks page completely. will not load

All plugins deactivated except GP and GB and page is still pulling 2.65gb after all images changed to medium, smush run on all images. Working on compressing to Webp but don’t expect it to make a difference with the editor speed. Could be pleasantly surprised.

Can you take a screenshot of the “memory demand”?

    Uploading Screenshots: https://docs.generatepress.com/article/using-the-premium-support-forum/#uploading-screenshots

Yes, do try converting them to webp as they are still contributing highly to your site’s slow performance: https://share.getcloudapp.com/JrupkD05

There are also resources from your plugins that are causing a delay: https://share.getcloudapp.com/4guNQndr

    Memory demand https://prnt.sc/PNeSymBcteGq

We are zero percent worried at this stage about page speed. The editor is broken.

To be clear, GB 1.7 breaks the page completely, hangs. GB 1.6 pulls 2.2gb+ memory and is so laggy its simply impossible edit without destroying things.

When we turn off GB, but leave GP on, the editor loads LIGHTENING FAST! You cannot outscroll it. Large images and all.

We did a test and removed the 5 block grids below each blurb which contained small images for sponsors.

Removing these grids made the page FUNCTIONAL, but certainly NOT desirable and the fear is as the page grows it will simply become unfunctional again.

It would see that this issue is caused by the endless nesting of blocks necessary to build with Generate blocks. A container contains a grid, a grid has 20 containers, which contain grids which have containers which have images. It’s layers and layers and layers of code to make a table with images.

In fact we gave up using GB for galleries and simply reverted back to the Gutenberg gallery block because it’s so simple.

We’re at a crossroads with using GB because this site is essentially a framework for a massive sit. Resolving this with confidence will tell us if we are able to move forward developing with GB or if now is the time to revert and reconsider our approach.

Any help / assistance is appreciated.

Hello, I was taking a look at that page and I can navigate fine on the editor, didn’t try to edit anything tho.

I saw that right now there are 31 active plugins, and you said you already tested with all of them deactivated. Can you deactivate them again, keeping only GenerateBlocks and GP Premium? That way I can check your site to try to find any memory leaks from our plugins.
