Andrea
Hello,
I know that according to available information Font Awesome is no longer used. I created my website in November 2020 using GP (Vinyasa template).
For privacy reasons (legal requirements in Germany) I do not want to use Fonts Awesome, nor Google Fonts on my website. I currently only use system fonts. However, it seems that both are still existent.
I can find Font Awesome in the theme file under generatepress – assets – fonts.
Google Fonts is shown to me by the Real Cookie banner and analysis tools, like BuiltWith.
I have already tried the following: Disabled all plugins and installed a plugin to “Disable and Remove Google Fonts”. In the additional CSS I removed everything under /* mailchimp form styling */ and /* lightweight social icons */ (even though I don’t know if this will do anything, I’m still a beginner). Why is Fonts Awesome still present in the theme?
And do you have any idea how I can get rid of Google Fonts? Thanks and best regards!

StaffCustomer SupportHi there,
1. The theme doesn’t load FontAwesome – we stopped using it way before 2020.
Where on your site are you seeing them being loaded ?2. Theme Fonts, you can load Google Fonts locally, this article explains how:
https://docs.generatepress.com/article/adding-local-fonts/
3. Real Cookie Banner, we cannot change how it loads its fonts. You would need to speak with the plugin developer. Or change the plugin. I see many German users use this plugin:

Hi David,
1. I found out that I seem to use FontAwesome somewhere on the site as it appears after scanning the site with the tool “BuiltWith” (https://builtwith.com/). The scan shows, that I supposingly use FontAwesome and Google Fonts API. I searched for both everywhere. The only place I found FontAwesome was by downloading the theme-file. As I said before, in the folder “generatepress —> assets —> fonts” there are various files named “fontawesome-webfont”. What are they doing inside the theme-file? And do they collect any data from my users? I don´t want to have any legal gap on my site.
2. Yes, I am planning to load Google Fonts locally but not before being sure that I don´t have them on my site anymore. In the case of Google Fonts I thougt that I had done averything to remove them but still find it → see 3.
3. My question about Real Cookie Banner was not about the plugin loading google fonts. The plugin Real Cookie Banner scans my site to find tools I need the users´ consent for. When I scan my site with this tool it finds “Google Fonts” on all my sites. When I get into the details it shows for example:
“<link rel=’stylesheet’ id=’generate-fonts-css’ href=’//fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Playfair+Display:regular,italic,700,700italic,900,900italic’ media=’all’ />”
“generate-fonts-css” sounds like generatepress to me. That´s why I am asking.

StaffCustomer SupportAh ok.
1. The font-awesome fonts are only in the Theme files for legacy installs of GeneratePress.
They don’t load on new sites, and they don’t collect data.2/3. So thats a GP font request for the Playfair font, which looks to be assigned to the Top bar on the site.
Are you using Dynamic Typography ?

1. Thanks, that´s great, so I am relieved about this point!
2. The one I showed you is only one example within many. What does GP font request mean? What does this mean for the data protection issue?
3. No, I didn´t know about this option until now. Would it be helpful?

StaffCustomer SupportFor now you can leave the typography system that you have.
You can upgrade later if you want.2. In your current system, if you selected a font in Customizer > Typography for a specific element eg. the Top Bar then GeneratePress will make the Request to load the font from Google. And this is what is happening.
You need to:
1. Customizer > Widgets, temporarily add a widget to the Top Bar.
2. then go to Customizer > Typography, where in the list of elements you should now see Top Bar, edit that and change the font toinherit
3. Remove the widget you added to the Top Bar.
4. Publish the customizer changes. That should remove that rogue google font 🙂
