I’m failing at a pretty simple (at least I thought so). I need an image after the category decription. I created a hook element, set the display rule to the archive of the specific category, put the standard HTML code in the editor and set the hook to generate_after_archive_description, and… nothing happens. Am I missing anything?

Entire Siteit works for both plain text and HTML. But this would render the image on ALL category pages.OK, so that means the hook is working but your Display Rule was not.
What was the display rule you had set for that archive ?
Ah, my bad! I am very sorry. I chose post category and not post category archive. My mistake. Everything works great. Thanks a bunch and sorry for the bother.
