    Hey guys,

I’m trying to build a global header for my site and I see 3 different methods:

    1. Use the theme customizer
    2. Use Elements > Header
    3. Use Elements > Block (set to Site Header)

What are the pros and cons of each method, and how do you decide which one to use for each individual use case?

    Thanks.

P.S. Method #2 seems to focus more on post headers rather than navigational headers, am I understanding correctly?

    Hi Lewis,

Commonly, #1 is the method used to create Headers but for really custom designs, custom code is needed.

#2 is more used for the merge feature nowadays to go hand-in-hand with a Block Element – Page Hero.

#3 allows you better control over the design but you’ll need to use a WP Navigation Block to add the menu.

Personally, I always use #1 except for instances where a really custom design is needed – then #3 may be an option for me.

Thank you for the fast and thorough response.

I decided to go with option #3 since I will need different header variations depending on the current category.

I’m having a lot of trouble with the navigation block, however. It seems as though, once inserted, it no longer syncs with the associated WordPress Menu. No amount of changes appear to have any impact on my navigation.

I realize this is a core WP block but I’m failing to see how anyone could use this to build a navigational header using method #3? Hopefully I’m missing something here.

    Thanks.

    Hi there,

.. It seems as though, once inserted, it no longer syncs with the associated WordPress Menu.

Thats correct, and its terrible, i would advise against using it for anything more than a simple menu.
If you have lots of content to manage then stick with the themes navigation.

If you need assistance with styling it etc. then let us know.

    Thanks David.

In that case, I think I’ll just use the theme navigation with conditional menus. It should suffice.

If I have any other issues I’ll post here. Thanks again.
