    Hello,

I am having an issue where my customizer is only showing widgets after I have saved a draft of my changes.

I believed it was only because of a server change and was attempting to make some reversions on settings, eliminating plugins completely, reverting to PHP7.4, and dumping all the cache I had available. Nothing was working to fix the issue.

There was no rush on that website, so I was content to keep adjusting things later until I could find the issue.

However, I just had another client site, on their own server which was not part of my recent migration, do the same thing when I saved my customized draft.

    I have:
    – Disabled plugins as much as possible without causing the sites to crash. Only one site can I attempt this, the other is under constant usage.
    – Dumped all the cache.
    – Tried is several other browsers.
    – Tried replicating the error in other sites where I COULD futz around.

I resolved ONE of the sites eventually by changing the theme. Going to customizer and discarding changes, then changing back to my GP Child theme. I cannot do that for the other site.

Another note is that both sites were set to transition from the old typography to the new typography.

I have included the site and credentials to log in, but PLEASE do not make any theme/visible changes as this site is active.

    Thank you for any assistance!

    Victoria

    Hi Victoria,

The issue is very unlikely caused by GP – we have not had any other reports on this.

My recommendation would be to start a staging site so you can go through the proper debugging steps suggested here:
    https://docs.generatepress.com/article/debugging-tips/

You can start with #1 (with the parent theme activated), if that doesn’t help then try #4.

Let me know how it goes.

Yes, I had followed the debugging tips. As much as I could for this site.

This site is a nightmare that I have been attempting to slowly clean up. I did not create it and I have no access to its server settings or backend of the database. Part of the cleanup process is what caused this issue.

I was able to unerringly recreate the issue in one of my eldest sites. I will provide a loom link in the Private Information box for you to see the error (note: there is no sound).

The issue appears when you are customizing the site, change from the deprecated typography to the current typography, and save it as a Draft.

Naturally, most people would not do this, and so this is an exceedingly rare issue that likely no one ever reported, since, if it was discovered, would likely be repaired simply, as I did in the lesser site, by changing the theme from GP to something else, going back to customizer, and discarding the changes before returning to GP.

However, unless I want to work on my days off at extremely early hours, I cannot put the site offline at this time to switch themes and repair the widgets that disappear upon theme change. I will do this if I have to, but I have a hope that the team will be able to send me a snippet I can put in functions or Code Snippets that will allow me to access the settings without changing themes.

Please review the video and let me know if you can help.

    Cheers and thank you,
    Victoria

Videos do not help with issues like this one unfortunately.

However, unless I want to work on my days off at extremely early hours, I cannot put the site offline at this time to switch themes and repair the widgets that disappear upon theme change.

Have you started a staging site as I suggested above? It is necessary if you don’t want to touch the live site with traffic.

but I have a hope that the team will be able to send me a snippet I can put in functions or Code Snippets that will allow me to access the settings without changing themes.

This isn’t something we can do as we are sure that this is not a GP-related issue.

    Well, ok then.

A shame really. I will have to do the weekend thing.

No, I did not do the staging site. There are issues and believe me when I say the weekend work is lesser of the headaches.

I will just mark this as resolved and close this.

    Thanks for checking the issue.

    Sounds good.

I would recommend looking into using a staging site to debug – it’s basically the only safe way without altering your live site with traffic.
