Ella
Hello,
I want to create a new site which is a mix of this: https://www.forgettingfairytales.com (Blog Theme: Dispatch) & this: https://oncejustadream.com/blog/ (Blog Theme: Avery).
I’m thinking the easiest way is to use the Avery Theme, as I want the homepage exactly like that and I still want to keep the “Start Here’ “Blog” etc titles but I then also want / need the feature like on Dispatch where you also have the blog categories (eg on here: https://www.forgettingfairytales.com Breakups, Dating, Relationships etc.)
Does that make sense? Is there any way I can add that element on the Avery Theme?
If not, the alternative is to use the Dispatch theme but take away the top header with all the recent posts automatically added into it / move this further down the page so you can still have intro text above it… I’m just not sure what that would look like.
Let me know what you think is / isn’t possible and the best way to go about creating this.
Thanks so much!
Ella

StaffCustomer SupportHi there,
the Dispatch site still uses WP Show Posts, which is fine, but today we have GenerateBlocks and its Query Loop block for showing lists of posts. And this method allows you to build the post lists in the blocked editor:
I would:
1. Import the Avery Site
2. Use the GB Query Loop block to add your lists of posts to its homepage.
To help with that we have some Patterns to import:https://generateblocks.com/library/?pattern-category=query-loop
If you have a dev or local site you could also import some of the other magazine style sites like Scribe, Info, Newsroom and copy out some of their query loops

Okay so this is the page I’d want to do it on: https://www.selfimprovementspace.com/blog/ I copied the third from bottom (on the right hand side) Category Query loop but it’s showing up with nothing to be found https://ibb.co/KwvvjN1 and I can’t see to see where to set the category as the category title is just a title.
I’d want the page to show each of the different categories going down, but with a button to press “Read More” which leads to a page with all the posts in that category (eventually – once I have enough content on there!) Will that be possible?
Thanks for your help!

It’s possible.
You’re using the default Blog Page though.
Two approaches you can do is:
1. Create a Block Element – Loop Template and display it to the Blog Page. Add the Query Loops there. There should be a Parameter called
taxonomies. Add this Parameter to add a category.2. The other way would be to create a new static page for the Blog Page, and add the Query Loops there.

Thanks for getting back to me! So I’ve done it as an option, making a new page. Please see here: https://www.selfimprovementspace.com/blog-page-test/ I can’t seem to see how to get the margins to go to standard like on my other pages however. Eg like here: https://www.selfimprovementspace.com/category/self-improvement-challenge/
It also looks a bit rubbish with all the sections just blending in together. Are there any easy templates I can copy to make the headlines stand out more?
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
Thanks for your help,

StaffCustomer SupportHi Ella,
The static page’s (https://www.selfimprovementspace.com/blog-page-test/) content container is set to
full width, it needs to be changed toDefault. You can check 2 places:
1. In the page editor > layout metabox: https://docs.generatepress.com/article/layout-metabox-overview/#where-is-it
2. Go to appearance > elements and look for a layout element, if the layout element sets all pages to full width, add this page to the exclusion list of the location.
Let me know if this helps!

I don’t really see how to do this as it looks like it’s already set to default but you can’t click on it: https://ibb.co/6NpNN8M Thanks, Ella

StaffCustomer SupportWhen the option is greyed out, it means there’s a layout element overriding it.
Can you go to appearance > elements and check?

What am I looking for here please? https://ibb.co/S58cgkT
Would it be easier if I edited the blog page directly? As I’ll only have to do a re-direct after all of this anyway. Or am I better to keep a separate page with all posts, no categories, listed?
This is where I want all the posts, broken down into all the different categories, to feature: https://www.selfimprovementspace.com/blog/
Thanks,

StaffCustomer SupportGenerateBlocks full page widthis the layout element that makes the page full width:
https://www.screencast.com/t/SNUz2907COPjEdit that layout element, go to the location, and add
page > blog-page-testto its exclude list. But this link https://www.selfimprovementspace.com/blog/ is the actual default blog, it’s an index page not a static page.
If you want to override its template, go to appearance > elements, create a new block element, select
loop templatefor the element type, and chooseblogas the location.Any content you added to this block element will become the new blog page.
