    Hello great team,

I have decided to take it to the next level with GeneratePress & GenerateBlocks. Therefore, I am going to learn the front-end languages: HTML & CSS. But as you know, there are a lot of changes going on recently at the web-development world including WordPress as well, therefore I want my decision on which languages to learn to be a right decision and future proof!

I have two questions here and I will be so much grateful if I found an answer for them:
1- To edit WordPress websites for clients using HTML&CSS AND to make my decision future-proof, do I learn HTML5 & CSS3 or just the standard HTML and CSS?
2- If I learned HTML5 & CSS3, can I use what I have learned to edit and tweak WordPress websites?

    Hi there,

    1. Learn HTML5 and CSS3 – they are the latest release versions of their standards.
As we can thankfully absolve ourselves from the shackles of Internet Explorer then we can use the latest standards with confidence 🙂

For general reference the Can I Use tool is great for checking browser compatibility of specific HTML Element or CSS property:

    https://caniuse.com

And Mozillas MDN Docs for getting a more easily digestible breakdown of how they work:

    https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/

    2. You can use it – but you may not need too, especially if you use GenerateBlocks.
But having an understanding of HTML and CSS, in my opinion, should be a must for anyone working on the web.
The two together are invaluable when it comes to understanding what layout or styles you can apply to the HTML you’re given. Or what HTML you may need to write so you can use the appropriate CSS to make that fancy design.

Clear and detailed professional answer as usual!
Just figure out one more simple question please: do you know any good resources (free or paid) to learn HTML5 and CSS3 who their teaching model are compatible with the GeneratePress’s philosophy of clean coding?

FreeCodeCamp offers a good free course for responsive web design. Its a good place to start:
