Hello,
I am trying to change the appearance of a menu item with a the css class option.
I added.secondary-nav { font-style: italic; font-size:14px; }as an additional css, however, the font size always gets overridden by the default theme settings. The font-style doesn’t since it’s not specified anywhere else.
What can I do to fix it?

Your CSS above looks like it’s for the secondary navigation. However, I’m not seeing a secondary navigation in the site you’ve linked.
Can you confirm?
Also, the font size can be handled in the customizer under the Typography panel:
