Hello, I am using GeneratePress Premium and really like it. However, I’ve noticed that my site doesn’t always manifest its form. For example, social icons and buttons often appear as text. Also, these same items are often not centered. And sometimes my “two column” grids appear as a single column. I can fix it by pressing control enter, but I’m concerned that this could detract from the user experience. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you, Bob

    Hi Bob,

This shouldn’t be a theme related issue. This may be related to caching, optimization, server issues or something else. Perhaps you can link us to the site in question, and we’ll try to see if we can replicate the issue? And, if we can replicate it, we’ll try identify the cause.

You may use the private information field for this: https://docs.generatepress.com/article/using-the-premium-support-forum/#private-information

    Kindly let us know. 🙂

Thank you – the site is Gohydrology.org. Is that all you need?

    Yes, this would be fine.

Aside from these missing media assets: https://share.getcloudapp.com/o0uR0EEj, there seems to be no other issue from your website on my end.

Can you confirm if this also occurs on other devices? Try test on your phone maybe? This could also be a device related or a network related issue. Try testing using a different internet service provider/network as well.

Kindly let us know how it goes. 🙂

Thanks for your help Fernando. I’m trying to learn all the nuances of maintaining a website, but feel a little overwhelmed at times. So, are you saying that my caching is fine? And in terms of the media assets: Is it an issue with my library? And what would I have to do or trouble shoot?

Also, Fernando: On Safari, and specifically the mobile version, my social icons at the top of the page (right under the water drop) do not center and are colored the wrong color, and also on Safari mobile – several areas where I added centered “hyperlinks” do not center. And other than the top global header button, I really got away from adding buttons to my front page because they seem to manifest as “plain text.” On Microsoft Explorer, the gohydrology.org site is a disaster: Nothing is formatted. The reason it bothers me is if people visit the site with those browsers, they probably won’t return.

I am using the SiteGround Optimizer, and I had to Combine Java Script to get my captions on photos to center. That helped. I keep trying to experiment with the optimizer to increase site speed, but also want my site to work well globally across all platforms, browsers, desktop and mobile.

Given the plugins I’m using, (GP Premium, WPShow Posts, Generate Blocks, Envira, Siloloquy), do you recommend any settings? I’m just so confused on all this, any ideas would help.

    Thank you for your time!

    Bob

    Hi there,

lets cover off the missing media assets.
There are several failing images that all use the same URL ie.:

    https://i0.wp.com/gohydrology.org/wp-content/plugins/soliloquy/assets/css/images/holder.gif?w=1200&ssl=1

Thats a placeholder image that Soliloquy loads whilst it waits for the real image to load.
And for whatever reason the JetPack Lazyloader which stores ‘copies’ of lazyloaded images on its CDN ( see https://i0.wp.com at the front of the URL ) hasn’t made a copy of it. So it returns a 400 error.

Having those errors doesn’t seem to be causing any issues, so you could ignore them.
Or if you want – check with JetPack or Soliloquy on how to fix them.

Now the general issues – lets tackle them one at a time. Checking on Mobile Safari i am not seeing any formatting issues, for example here is the social media links:

is that how you expect them to look ?

Hey David, Good to see you, and thanks for chiming in. Question: I’m looking at Safari Mobile. Are you looking at mobile, too. That’s where I see the social icons all bunched up on the left. Also on Safari Mobile, a couple links I added after major sections (i.e. at the bottom of the water challenge), they also truncate left. I actually quit using buttons because they would manifest as text, and I think that was in Chrome, too.

BTW: My site really works well on Chrome desktop and Chrome Mobile. It works “okay but not perfect” in Microsoft Edge. (i.e. the “Go to Full Questions and Answers Key” at the end of the water challenge and my “subscribe” at the footer of the page both truncate left.

Thank you for your help — this has always been lifeline and so glad I’m part of GP Premium.

Question: I’m looking at Safari Mobile. Are you looking at mobile, too.

Yes i am, i just took screenshot on my iPhone and cropped it just to show that part of the page.

If you’re getting a different result then it may be a case that the Mobile phone browser cache needs clearing. If the issue persists then can you connect the phone to a different network ( eg. Wifi or Mobile ) and open an Private Browser to view the page.

NOTE: by switching to a different network we can eliminate any potential caching issues on the Router or with the ISP. As they too cache web pages.

Microsoft Edge issues i will have to refer to one of my colleagues as i only have my MacBook with me today.
Ill get them to take a look.

Thanks David — I’m going to mark this topic as resolved for now, but I will probably be back in touch on it. I’m curious: With WP Show Posts, I love that — It’s really enabled me to splice and dice my categories and tags — and organize what was previously unorganizable (the WP blog is a powerful database if tagged and categorized properly). That being the case, I noticed that on my SiteGround Optimizer I had to disable Combine Javascript in order for “text centering” to work on WPShowPost content. Given that I’m pretty much using all the GP packages (themes, builder WPShowposts), are there any other settings in the Optimizer I should disable?

Or any other ideas or suggestion, just let me know.

    Thanks again!

    Bob

There isn’t really a 100% conclusive guide to what one should and what one should not enable in those plugins.
Code base even on near identical sites can vary, and the compression methods the plugins use can glitch out on one site and not the other.
My personal view is the less options i check the better. Which means you may need to get your hands dirty with some manual optimizing.

If you want to raise a new topic we can take a quick look at the sites performance and offer some advice.
