Eric
This one is a doozy – I am unsure how to proceed and am hoping that GP support has some ideas.
Basically, a client site is running on a Cloudways-based 2GB Digital Ocean droplet. Whenever a logged-in user visits the Media Library (wp-admin/upload.php) it causes the server CPU to spike to 100% until the server crashes and needs to be restarted.
Normally this would be a plugin conflict and I’d try to determine which plugin is causing the issue — but after spending 3 hours with Cloudways support, deactivating all plugins and reactivating them one at a time, the issue persisted and it was determined that GP/GPP were the cause. This was verified when we switched to the default Twenty Twenty-One theme and the CPU usage immediately returned to normal. (Yes, the site is running the most recent versions of GP/GPP.)
Cloudways support said to tell you that the issue is being caused because the theme is directly calling each image in the media library, which overloads the server’s PHP and causes the CPU spikes and related errors.
Does this sound possible? If so, are you able to investigate?
I have a cloned site all set up, currently running the Twenty Twenty-One theme. In the private info section I will include the site health report and admin-level login credentials so that you can log in, visit the media library page (to see that it is operating as it should), then activate the GP theme, visit the media library again, and see how the site bogs down and eventually does not respond.
I am hoping to not have to rebuild the site using a different theme. I am happy to provide more info and any assistance I can from my end, but I wanted to start the process because my client is unable to use their site and media library as normal, and they are getting frustrated.

Lead DeveloperLead DeveloperHi Eric,
Cloudways support said to tell you that the issue is being caused because the theme is directly calling each image in the media library, which overloads the server’s PHP and causes the CPU spikes and related errors.
Did they provide any sort of details on what made them think this?

I can say quite confidently that it isn’t possible. If the theme itself had a bug like this, it would affect all of the sites (400,000+) using it. There are no functions in the theme that even query the Media Library, especially every image inside of it.
We personally have sites at Cloudways (our entire Site Library is hosted there), and we don’t have this issue.
If they have any specific details, I would be very interested in investigating. Have there been any modifications made to the theme? Have you tried re-installing it?
Let me know 🙂

Tom, thanks for the quick reply. I was skeptical when CW support blamed it on the GP theme, but this is a multi-day troubleshooting issue that has me at my wit’s end and I was hoping they had found a solution.
I am going to try some additional things today, so I am not going to mark this resolved, just in case I do find something related to GP. I am skeptical that is the problem, though.
Thanks for the great products and support, always!
