Hi guys, my apologies in advance as this is probably a simple fix, but I added a drop down onto my blog and since then, when I click on “Blog” on mobile, it shows this page: https://www.forgettingfairytales.com/blog/ instead of all the posts.

On desktop however, when you click on blog, it shows this page, which is displayed correctly: https://www.forgettingfairytales.com/blog-2/

How do I make it so that https://www.forgettingfairytales.com/blog-2/ shows up on mobile when you click blog, but it appears as just https://www.forgettingfairytales.com/blog/ and when you click on blog on desktop, the URL will be https://www.forgettingfairytales.com/blog/ but display it how it currently does at the moment – with all the posts showing up? (If that makes sense!)

    Thanks,
    Ella

    Hi there,

you need to edit the Menu that has its location set to the Off Canvas Panel, as this contains the incorrect URL.

Where can I find this sorry?

Also, I’m noticing traffic is going to similar broken pages – like this one: https://www.forgettingfairytales.com/home-4/ I haven’t created it. When I search “pages” I don’t see it, so I don’t know where it’s coming from? How do I remove these without it causing any 404 issues?

Go to Appearance > Menus and select each menu for editing and check its location.
You may find this doc useful, it provides a lot of info on how the WordPress Menu Builder works:

The one probably called Mobile Menu assigned to the Off Canvas Location is the one you need to remove the old links from and add your new links.

That will erradicate those links that are 404ing

I’ve managed to change https://www.forgettingfairytales.com/blog-2/ to https://www.forgettingfairytales.com/blog/ and then added a custom link on the mobile menu so that it will navigate to https://www.forgettingfairytales.com/blog/ which is now correct, I pressed save, I cleared my mobile browsing data, but it doesn’t seem to be updating?

I’m also unsure how I could delete https://www.forgettingfairytales.com/blog-2/ without the 404 occurring. Do I need to delete that page if it’s not being used? But won’t that then automatically make the 404 show up if anyone happens to then visit that?

    Thanks,
    Ella

Caching can be at many levels, including your Router and ISP, so sometimes you don’t immedidately see the changes even after clearing the Site and Browser caches.

I checked the site and the URL for the Blog page is correct.

Delete the other blog page as its not required.
If someone does visit the old URL, yes it will 404.
If google had indexed the old Blog page, then over time it will discount that link because of the 404.
If it remains an issue in the future then you can look at setting up 301 Redirects, but i wouldn’t be concerned about that today.

You can of course design your own 404 page using a Block Element. So it gives the user some other content or links to visit. Maybe include a WP Show Posts list of your latest posts 🙂

    To do that:

    1. Create a New Block Element.
    2. Set the Element Type to Content Template.
    3. Build your 404 page to include whatever you like.
    4. Set the Display Rules to 404 Page.

And you will have a nice pretty 404 that will guide users where you really want them 🙂
