Hi Team,
I’m having (new) CLS issues with the new version of GP in desktop.
Once page was tag with a CLS of more than 0.25 (desktop). Link in priv info
While others have an above 0.1 CLS, thus they were tag as “needs improvement”.I’m not sure what is causing this, since my CLS score was below 0.1 before.
I’m not sure if there’s an element or specific are that affects the page. Can you please check it out? Any idea what’s causing the high CLS?
Appreciate the help. Thanks!

The main issue I’m seeing is that your logo is being lazy loaded.
If you’re able to exclude your logo from your lazy loading plugin, it should fix the issue.
Let us know ๐

Okay, I will try to exclude it and see how it goes.
Thanks!

October 23, 2020 at 11:31 am #1501649Peter PaulHi Tom,
Looks like not lazy loading the site’s logo helped.
But new CLS issues went up.
An example is in the private information
That’s one of the specific page google is pointing out.
But I checked the others and they seemed to be okay.
Kindly let me know what to adjust or fix.Thank you!

October 23, 2020 at 2:27 pm #1501797Peter PaulHi Tom,
That’s very strange.
Sometimes this CLS thing is driving me nuts.
One day it’s okay and the other it’s not.
Search console is reporting that there is an issue, but when I manually check using their own tools, there’s no issue.
Should we just ignore it and give it some time?I also used the Chrome web vitals plugin to check any core vitals issue.
Sometimes when the page loads, it’s all green.
But there are times that CLS gets a red flag. Thanks!
October 24, 2020 at 5:00 am #1502187DavidStaffCustomer SupportHi there,
CLS issues are just flags at the moment – Google does not apply them in their ranking algoritms yet – thats propose for 2021. So probably worth giving it a little while to see what Field Data it collects as this will ultimately be the factor is uses in the future.
October 24, 2020 at 10:22 am #1502640Peter PaulHi David,
Thanks! Yup, but better fix these issues now than suffer later.
I just hope Google’s “checking” would be more accurate as sometimes it’s really a miss or hit.
I’ll tag this issue as resolved for now since will have to wait things out. Thanks for the help! Have a great weekend!

October 27, 2020 at 1:28 am #1505794Peter PaulHi Tom,
I’m just checking the pages individually, and I noticed that when I scroll a page mid-way or towards the bottom, the CLS changes. Sometimes it goes more than .1, even .2 or .5.
I can’t pin point exactly what element is causing this.
Is it the images on the articles/pages? Perhaps due to lazyload
Or perhaps the elements after the content is causing the layout shift? What do you think?
Thanks!
October 27, 2020 at 4:05 am #1505947DavidStaffCustomer SupportIs there a specific page where you see this ?
October 29, 2020 at 6:16 am #1509197Peter PaulHi David,
Sorry for the late reply.
This page for example (link in private info)
It’s a newly publish article.
CLS sometimes is okay, below .01, but there are times it goes above .1.
I tried refreshing it a few times and the CLS does go up at times.
Could it be the banner ad? Or something else.Let me know what you think.
Thanks!
October 29, 2020 at 10:16 am #1509911DavidStaffCustomer SupportOnly seeing a 0.004 CLS in the Lab Data.
If its massively fluctuating then I would hazard a guess that something being loaded from a 3rd party server or across a slow CDN is the cause. Finger pointing at Adverts as being the most likely culprit.Might be worth just leaving it a while to see what Field Data it collects.
October 30, 2020 at 5:35 am #1510797Peter PaulOkay David.
But I am thinking of removing the top banner ad.
And putting those large skyscraper ads on both sides (left and right, outside the main container) and make them float.
At least it wont “affect” the main content or move something on the main content.
What do you think?
Can we do that in GP? Any idea how? Thanks!
