Zoom out logo header

Hello there!
I'm looking for a way to do a “soft” logo zoom out (on hover), like the logo at left on this site: http://www.planetary.org/
I've already tested this CSS code: https://generatepress.com/forums/topic/logo-hover/#post-83213 but it makes a rough image hover. I'm looking for a smooth effect like the link above.

But note the logo to the left. When you put the mouseover, it abruptly changes from one image (bigger) to another (smaller). I would prefer a soft zoom out, as as shown on http://www.planetary.org/
