widgets not available

Hi
Both my contracted programmer and web host support have looked at this issue and not been able to sort out an answer. I use the GeneratePress theme and it has been very stable, but in the past week or so I have abruptly lost the ability to use the available widgets in appearance. They are greyed out and cannot be added to a sidebar. The widgets that are in place cannot be updated, and are not working properly all of a sudden.
I am not saying it is the theme, but wondering if you have seen this.

do you have the Gutenberg Plugin installed on the site ?
No, I double-checked and I do not ... should I?
No - its an experimental plugin for testing new gutenberg features - its just we have seen that plugin cause similar issues.
The next thing to try is temporarily disabling ALL other plugins aside from GP Premium and if you're using a Child Theme switch back to the Parent Theme, Then recheck your widgets. If the issue goes away the re-enable plugins one by one to find out which is conflicting.
