White Screen Of Death When Editing Menu

Hi guys,

I have a very strange issue where I get a WSOD (when logged in) if I edit the main menu on my site. So I have a number of links in my menu, and one of those links has a sub-menu item.

I want to remove the sub-menu item, but when I do, all I get is a WSOD. If I add the sub-menu item back in, the page is restored. Note: this only happens for me when I'm logged in. so everything works fine for visitors.

I've tried clearing cache, re-saving permalinks, changing the homepage to a different page and putting back. But nothing works.

I don't believe this is a plugin issue, as I haven't changed or added any and I've edited my nav menu in the past without issue.

Any idea what's going on here?

Just to add to this...the WSOD ONLY occurs on the homepage. I can see all sub-pages and posts just fine.

Hi there,

I logged into your site. I am not seeing a sub menu - so i assume that has been removed (?) - and i can also see the Homepage both on the front end and the editor.

So does the issue only occur if you try editing menus via the customizer whilst viewing the homepage ?

The homepage is blank permanently as long as the sub-menu item (it was under the newsletter item) is removed. If I add it back, the homepage re-appears. I've tested this in multiple browsers and the issue is consistent in both (firefox and Brave).

I've just been doing some testing in the customiser, and if I disable "Mobile Header" under Layout > Header the issue is resolved. I wonder if you logged in while I have the "Mobile Header" option set to "Off". I've just set it back to "On" let me know if you still can't replicate the issue.

Note: the page works fine, even when the issue is occurring, when the customiser is loaded. The only time the homepage is blank is when I visit my standard homepage while logged in.

Side note: Switching "Mobile Header" to "Off" doesn't seem to make any changes to the menu, even when shrunken down to a mobile size. What does that setting actually do?

I just logged in again - I can see the Mobile Header is enabled and i can still see the Homepage correctly ( checked on Chrome / Firefox / Safari ). I also opened the customizer, and made some changes without publishing and it was behaving correctly.

Are you using any browser extensions or password managers as they can sometimes cause issues.

The Mobile Header is to provide a shortcut to setting up a minimized header for mobile which also has its own Logo options. For your particular site design, i don't think its necessary - more suited for sites where a larger desktop header is being used with things like a header widget or navigation below header.

Nope. I just tested it in a private browser windows with no plugins enabled and it was the same. I'll try from my other machine over the weekend and will report back. Since the "Mobile Header" option isn't required for my site, that mitigates the issue anyway, but I'd still like to get to the bottom of it.

Will report back over the weekend. Thanks for the quick response, David.

No problems.
WSOD generally occurs if there is low PHP memory sometimes the device memory ( although i never experienced that ) - so if disabling options stops the issue then it could be a memory thing.

Let us know how you get on.

Think I've got to the bottom of it. I updated a plugin on my site this morning and it seems to have caused all kinds of issues. I reverted to a backup from yesterday and was able to remove the sub-menu item without the WSOD issue occurring. 99.9% sure the issue is with this plugin.

Apologies for wasting your time, David.

No apologies necessary - glad to hear you found the cause !
