where should I set the layout of the homepage content area

you can use GenerateBlocks Free.

1. Create a new Page.
2. Use the Disable Elements / Layout Meta box to remove the title, sidebars etc:

3. Use GenerateBlocks Query Loop block to add a each list of posts you require.
When you Add a Query Loop, go to its Settings > Add Parameter eg. Taxonomy -> Category --> Your category, to change what that list displays.
