Website down due to Theme Error

Hey team,

Earlier I received an email from Wordpress indicating that that there had been a technical issue with a site I manage. I checked the website and it was completely down. Using the Wordpress recovery mode link I gained access and have been trying to resolve the issue since.

The Wordpress Email seems to suggest an issue with the GP Theme and on investigation, under Dashboard > Appearance > Themes it says that Generatepress Theme is unable to load. I was given the option to 'resume' Generatepress, so I tried that and nothing happened. In case it was the Child Theme causing then issue, I tried to swap to the normal Generatepress Theme, by finding it in the Wordpress Theme Installer. I found it there and it showed it to be active, even though it does not show up under the Themes. Anyway, I clicked Activate and the GP Theme appeared under Themes as it should. However the errors still showed and the site was still broken.

I then checked CPanel to make sure the Theme files were all intact and they were.

I renamed the GP Theme and removed it, so that I can install a fresh version. This appeared to work, but when I activated the Child Theme, the Child Theme data was not accessible.

So I am currently in the middle of a full account restore (which will take 6 hours) as I have been unable to fix the issue. As the website was working fine earlier today and there have been no changes, I am confident the website will return to normal, but in case it does and then does this again later, I thought it best provide this report and the email from Wordpress (in Private Information).

If you have ideas what caused this, please advise so I can check if it happens again. If it is a bug, then hopefully this post will help you get on top of it.

All the best

Hi there,

did you have any custom functions related to Typography on the site ?

Pretty sure we did, yes David

Sorry, the site is currently down as the restoration failed. I am trying a different backup from a bit earlier now, so hopefully the site will be back subsequently.

It looks as though a callback to a dynamic typography setting was made before that module had been initialised. Which resulted in the Call to undefined function error.

When its back up and running, it would be good see what functions are running in the child theme.

I will let you know when it is back up again. Should I send you a copy of the Child Theme file or temp login?

Send us a Temp Login and we can take a look.

Hey David,

The website is back up at last. Please let me know what you find.

I had a look around the child theme, code snippets and elements and nothing jumps out at me as being an issue.
Just to be on the safeside - I am going to ask Tom to take a look at the error log.

Thanks David, I'll let you know if it does it again.

We had another look at the logs and nothing notable we can see as an issue.
Keep us posted if anything arises again.
