Volume theme is not respecting the excerpt word limits

The Volume theme is just copy-pasting the entire excerpt, even though the excerpt word lengths are set in their respective elements:
- Post Archive Template: 30
- First Post Template: 30
- Single Post Hero: 30
I've tried changing excerpt length in customizer too, still no luck.
