The other SEO myth is that 404s will hurt you in the SERPs – that is also a big no. You literally can have millions of 404s and will not hurt your SERP rankings – it will hurt your user experience and if you have a super large site may affect your crawl quota – but the actual algo expects 404s as a normal part of the web
