Trouble getting WP Live Chat on my web pages

I have tried installing several "live chat" boxes on my site but no luck. One issue is, when I'm instructed to add a code snippet to the footer.php, a stern warning discourages me from doing so.
Yes, I know I should make a backup, etc., but it is no comfort to know I can "break" my site with such a simple move.
Do you suggest a safe method of getting a chatbox installed without this dilemma?
I may have to change themes if this prevails.

no need to be editing themes - add your script with the Hook Element:

You can select the WP_footer hook from the list.
