Smilies not working

shortcoded smilies are not working in my bbpress reply threads. ie. :-) doesn't render anything.
I have tried spacing, text in front -:-)- everything...
I have checked the images folder and the smilies are there.
I have read some stuff online that refers to setting smiley option in settings/writing but I think that is no longer in the WP UI?
Any ideas how to fix this.

Hi Max,
I'm not sure - you'll have to check with bbPress or try deactivating your plugins to see if the conflict is coming from one of them.

They don't show in WP comments either.
I tried the mona lisa plugin and then uninstalled it.
Is it possible it altered a core file?
Heads up to anyone trialing the WP Monalisa smilies plugin.
It changes the settings in your db and does not correct them on delete.
After you have deleted this plugin you will have to go to your WP option table in your database via phpmyadmin and then look for use_similies. Change the option value from 0 back to 1 and then native wp smilies will return to your site.
