Site Layout is not working

It used to be very easy to disable elements in Generatepress and start with a blank page by creating a site layout with all the elements disabled. This no longer works. Has something changed? I still have pages and posts showing widgets and sidebars after disabling everything and creating a site layout for the entire site.
