Setting Layouts for Posts + Content

Sorry guys probably quite a simple question - but can someone point me to where I edit the 'Layouts' of content, i.e. Custom Post Types, Pages, Archive etc? By 'Layout' I mean adding/ removing widgets for example.
I am clear on 'hooks' - that all works great but I was after more 'generic' layouts for my Custom Post Type pages.

Our Layout Element might be worth checking out. It allows you to set sidebar layouts, number of footer widgets etc..
If you want to display different widgets based on certain conditions, a plugin like this might help: https://wordpress.org/plugins/content-aware-sidebars/
