You are correct - unfortunately Sections cannot be used on index pages (posts, archive etc).

What are you trying to add? GP Hooks with conditional tags might be what you are looking for

Keep in mind that GP hooks will soon be replaced with Hooks Elements so you won't have to write the PHP code anymore:

ok thanks, I'll use hooks then, I wanted to ass some Toolset views.
But will the old hooks work after update? Will they be preserved at all?

The old hooks module will still be there if you have content in there.

However I would highly recommend wait until Monday or becoming a tester unless you don't mind migrating after 1.7 is released.
