I’ve been working on a revision for my personal site and taking the opportunity to learn Generatepress and the premium plugins. I’m also using Elementor and while obviously immature, seems to be a nice sidekick.
Anyway, after working with the header and some other things, I’m really pleased with the look on mobile devices. I have one nagging problem on the desktop, though. When it scrolls to an anchor tag, it goes too far. That seems to happen no matter what browser.
Please keep the laughter to a minimum, but here’s the site:
Thanks for any help.
(Tom – for completeness, I’ve hooked in some code you gave me earlier for smooth scrolling. I doubt that matters, but thought I would mention it.)
August 12, 2016 at 8:23 am #217683LeoStaffCustomer SupportHello,
You didn’t actually provide a link to the site π
August 12, 2016 at 8:40 am #217690SteveI swear I did, but, hey, I’m getting OLD!
August 12, 2016 at 9:06 am #217700TomLead DeveloperLead DeveloperHow are you adding the anchors? Are you using IDs (
<div id="locateus">...</div>
) or anchors (<a name="locateus"></a>
)?August 12, 2016 at 12:33 pm #217747SteveI’ve been using Elementor.
August 12, 2016 at 8:01 pm #217784TomLead DeveloperLead DeveloperAnd they have an option to add the ID?
Maybe ask them – it might be something I have to tweak in the theme, but it’s hard for me to tell as I don’t know the inner workings of the anchor system they’re using.
Let me know π

If there’s any way to contact the Elementor folks, I sure can’t find it. I don’t expect much, but it’s not too bright to depend on something with ZERO support. Time to move on. For a site this simple, pure GP makes more sense, anyway.
FWIW, the only clue I find for their methodology is this: “This ID will be the CSS ID you will have to use in your own page, Without #.”
So close, but yet…..

August 13, 2016 at 9:17 am #217914TomLead DeveloperLead DeveloperLooks like you can find support in one of these two places:
https://github.com/pojome/elementor/issues
https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/elementorHave you tried it without Elementor? Did it work better?
August 13, 2016 at 10:43 am #217941SteveI’ve gone from a site which I felt was 90% done to one that’s 9% done over simple anchor tags.
Anyway I stopped Elementor and virtually everything else. I inserted simply:
<a name="locateus"></a>
I put
/#locateus
in the menu and it is totally ignored. CLicking the menu link does absolutely zero. This was happening last night.Time to start over I guess. How can something so simple be so hard?
Thanks……

Perhaps try the free, lite version of Beaver Builder π
https://wordpress.org/plugins/beaver-builder-lite-version
All of the BB elements have a place in the Advanced tab of their editor where you can add an ID as well as a Class Name. I just enter the ID there and then add that ID in the button link. Smoothly scrolls to the desired location.
Have a look here for it in use with GeneratePress and BB – start with the Learn More button π

Cheers!

Steve – if Elementor was the difference between a 90% done website and a 9% done website, I’m sure we can find a solution that will work for you. No point is re-doing everything over some anchors that should have a simple explanation π
May 6, 2018 at 1:00 pm #569076Accounts PayableHi Steve.
You’ve probably built several more websites by now; however, I too had the same issue. My work around was to add the anchor link to the bottom of the section above the section I wanted the anchor link to scroll to. Given that I give each section a top and bottom padding, it worked perfectly.
