Replacing navigation item with icon

I installed better font awesome and pasted in the html into the navigation label but it didn't work. It just showed a strange icon but not the icon I wanted. I tried with several different icons but same strange icon. In the menu settings. Only navigation label shows up and no other option or settings on each menu item. Is there something Im missing?
I want to replace the 'PROFILE' menu item with an icon.

but not sure also how to resize it. make it a bit bigger so its same size as the search and cart icon

I'm not seeing an icon in your navigation right now?
It might be easier to use a plugin like this: https://wordpress.org/plugins/menu-icons/
No I took it out. I'll add it back in now
