Recreate this page using GP and GP Blocks

I need to recreate this blog archive page (done in beaver themer) to GP only. I understand how to do the header and how to add blocks to standard pages but I don't seem to be able to use blocks on the blog page?
1. Do I just added the side bar from GP to take over the sidebar on this page?
2. How would I style the thumbs on this page to be the same?
3. Do I need any special settings using elements for the general achieve?
