Premium licence renewal

I just renewed my license and the instructions say I have to download Premium and install it. Do I really have to do that? Can I not just update the license key? That sounds very scary. I don't want to lose all my Premium settings - that would be a disaster.

No need to re-install.
Just make sure the auto update is activated with the valid license key and you should be good to go: https://docs.generatepress.com/article/updating-gp-premium/#activating-updates
