Needing to update on dev clone site

Hi. I am a GP pro user who is just now getting back into it after several months. I want to significantly modify my michaelfeerer.com website design without affecting the current public site. Then "flip a switch" to instantly switch when I am ready (several weeks from now). So I've created michaelfeerer.com/dev/ clone site within my main directory and want to update it to the latest GP Premium. However, that update fails, reporting "Update Failed: Download failed. Unauthorized"
How do I solve this? (I'm not a web developer pro... just a novice getting by.) I thought web developers do clone sites all the time for major updates. Do you support that?
