Need help with left sidebar

I am building a site with mostly pages and without a header. I created a topbar into which I placed an image.
I want a left side bar with a gray background which will hold my navigation menu. I have watched all the you tube videos I can find but can’t figure it out.

Do I create a sidebar element or is there a setting I am missing? When I go into the Global Colors, I don’t see an option to colorize the sidebar. See the link below.

The link won't allow me to type into it. It's a png file. How can I email you the link to use to see it local on my computer? Sorry. I figured it out.

See Private information.

Is there a specific reason why you are using a secondary navigation instead of a primary navigation?

No. I'm just learning. Should it be primary navigation? Is that why I don't see Left Sidebar in Global Colors or in the layout?

If that's the main navigation for your site then I'd go with primary navigation first.

Once that's done, you can change the color by changing the Primary Navigation Colors in the customizer:

Hope this helps.

I tried changing it to Primary and now it's gone! I don't think have have the settings right.

The code is showing that the navigation location is set to float right which is in the header.

And the header is removed so you don't see the navigation.

Can you confirm?

Ok I set it to Left Sidebar. I still don't see Left Sidebar under Global Colours. How do I change the background colour of the sidebar?

Yes. I still don’t see Left Sidebar under Global Colours. How do I change the background colour of the sidebar?

I tried that but it only changes the colour of the navigation background. I want the whole sidebar to be a gray colour.
