Navigation position - sidebar content disappears

When I set the Navigation Position to "right sidebar," the navigation moves into the left sidebar, and all of the widgets and content I have in the left sidebar disappear. I can display both navigation AND content in the RIGHT sidebar, but not in the LEFT sidebar.
Is there any way to show both the navigation AND content in the LEFT sidebar?
Hmm, that doesn't sound like default functionality.

Can you link me to a page where the navigation is set to a sidebar and the rest of the widgets don't display?
Can you confirm that you have widgets added into that area in "Appearance > Widgets"?
