LCP is 2.7 and needs to be 2.5 or less...

Hello,
I'd love any suggestions on how to get the LCP time lower on my blog for both desktop and mobile as they both fail in Google Console. I've tried everything I can think of and just can not solve this issue.
Here is one example where both mobile and desktop fail core web vitals -- https://pagespeed.web.dev/report?utm_source=psi&utm_medium=redirect&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.journalbuddies.com%2Fwriting-2%2Finteresting-topics-to-write-about%2F&hl=en&form_factor=desktop
This one passes mobile and fails desktop -- https://pagespeed.web.dev/report?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.journalbuddies.com%2Fwriting-2%2Fpersuasive-writing-prompts-for-elementary-students%2F&form_factor=mobile
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jill
Hi Jill,
One factor affecting LCP seems to be render blocking JS coming from your other plugins.
Testing in Lighthouse on mobile, your LCP is good but render blocking JS seem to be the major factor affecting your Core Web Vitals: https://share.getcloudapp.com/5zur5YJK
Also see: https://share.getcloudapp.com/d5uObA0B
Correspondingly, this also affects LCP.
Autoptimize currently doesn’t have a functionality to address that, I believe.
An alternative to autoptimize you can try is WP Rocket which has a function to delay JS execution.
You could also try temporarily disabling non-GP plugin which are heavy with JS to see their impact on your website.
Hope this helps! Kindly let us know what you think.
Thanks, Fernando. I have WP Rocket running as well and for months have adjusted settings and so forth without success. The plugins I use are quite essential so I can temporarily disable them and will do so, but shy of that, it seems that moving to a new theme may be my next best option.
Hi there,
following on from what Fernando mentioned, have a look at the waterfall report from WebPageTest
https://www.webpagetest.org/result/220606_BiDcXG_9EM/1/details/#waterfall_view_step1
It provides a good illustration of what your site is loading. To be honest i have rarely seen a site making 400+ requests especially across so many different 3rd party domains.
To put it into perspective the GeneratePress home page makes 23 requests after its fully loaded. And of those requests the Theme accounts for around 4 of them.
The issue is the large number of 3rd party requests to advert provides and their tracking scripts, and in addition to the network requests each of them is adding scripts that are tying up the browser and creating a massively fluctuating Total Blocking Time. Those issues need to be addressed, as i am afraid changing the theme whilst those exist won't resolve the issue.
I have seen those and it looks as though most of those are bid requests via my ad company (which is very reputable). I am just stumped by this but thank you for your help.
I ran a few more tests on other posts, the main LCP element on desktop is generally the Sidebar, and that includes the image. Which is being lazyloaded. Can you exclude that image from being lazyloaded ? As that may have a positive improvement.
Hi David,
Thanks for taking the time to run some more tests on other posts. I really appreciate it and have excluded that sidebar image from being lazy-loaded.
Now its a case of waiting to see if that makes any improvement in the real world.
Yes, waiting and with luck, I'll see the result I need. Thanks again to you and Fernando for your help and assistance.
Best,
Jill
You're welcome. Fingers crossed :)
