Lazy Load Page Hero Background Image

I purchased premium and am trying to decide whether to use it on my upcoming projects.
How would I go about lazy-loading a page hero background image? I don't see an immediate way to filter the output and just with a quick review, standard lazyload plugins won't work because the background image is not inlined on the dom element.
