issue with creating a header template with Elementor

Trying to create a header template with Elemetor, and following the video tutorial by Sebastian, but a GP page backdrop renders as I am creating the header, and upon saving, shows up as an entire GP 'page' with my custom header. I just want the header. In the video it did not have GP showing up too.
Is there a setting I need to disable?

The 'Canvas Template' is only available if I build a page, it does not appear as an option when creating templates

Just to make sure, you are hoping to create a header using Elementor and the current issue is that GP's header is displaying?
