How did you do Recent Posts?

On the Tasty site you have a section in the right column - Recent Posts - I would like to do that for Favorite Picks. How did you do that? And can I pick whatever posts I want and not actually Recent Posts. Right now I'm using a text widget with an image and a link to the post but it doesn't really look the way I would like it to.
