how can I merge the header/navigation and homepage content?

I need to show the top header and navigation behind the full width slider on the homepage. I can't seem to get this to work. I've set the opacity of the header background so that the image will show through. But I cannot get the full width slider to sit right at the top of the page. Please could you advise? Thanks.
