Hero backgrounds on Category archive

We use a custom field to add a featured image to Categories. How can I use the custom featured image instead of the background image uploaded to the Element? Is there a function that can swap GP's background img for my field? It would be easier for our content team to manage Category descriptions and images more so than duplicating Elements and targeting each Category.
