Grid Layout Question

Good Day All,
I have been trying to figure out the whole column/grid layout. I a not sure if this person did it with widgets or not, but I was trying to figure out how one can achieve this look with GP.
If it's not possible that is okay as well.

Hi there,
we could do something similar but it would require some CSS and maybe a little bit of PHP. If you're up for that then the first thing would be to set your blog up to two columns, set your archive featured images sizes to auto auto so we have the basic layout. Let me know.

Really I'd hate for you to help and find out it didn't work the way it does in my mind, the PHP and CSS doesn't bother me, but I wouldn't want to get it done only to say Nah nevermind I don't like the way it looks with my content.
