GP Theme Templates - combined

Hi,
I am about to upgrade the theme on one of my sites to GP and was looking at using on of the templates to speed up the process.
I like aspects of two different templates. if I apply the volume template but want to create a home page like Catalyst, is it possible to source the design pieces for that particular page and apply to my site?
Thanks,
Rachel
Hi there,
This is not something we have built-in but I believe you can import Catalyst first, then go through the steps here except deleting the home page and Lightweight Grid Columns plugin:
https://docs.generatepress.com/article/removing-imported-site/
This is untested but worth a shot if you have a new site :)
Otherwise we can help you rebuild the home page of Catalyst. Let me know which route you want to go.
It is for a live site, so I don't really want to install and then delete. I would prefer to apply the theme, then build the home page.
Also, just to confirm, is it possible to apply the templates to an existing site?
Hi there,
we recommend only installing a GP Site on a clean install, as it imports settings, CSS and content, the results it may have on a website with existing content may not be desirable....
Of course testing it on a clone site would be viable.
Just be mindful it will (try to) replace menus, widgets, add hooks / headers, additional CSS...
Hi David,
So if I am to move to GP Premium on my current site, is there a way to obtain the specific settings for a theme template that can be applied manually to a live site?
I am not technical and cannot code these design elements myself, so was hopeful the template would fast track my implementation of GP Premium on my site. I don't have a staging site unfortunately, so was planning to put into maintenance mode and apply changes in a short period of time.
Any suggestions appreciated as I need to move themes sooner rather than later.
Thanks,
Rachel
Could you link me to your current Site? Be easier to advise on whether it is even feasible.
Also worth checking with your host about staging server or creating a clone on a subdomain, its a pretty common requirement :)
Sure, it is http://www.adventureandsunshine.com Thanks.
OK, there are quite a lot of theme specific widgets on the site from category nav, twitter feed, related posts. These are the things that would need considering ie. what do i lose or what breaks when I switch theme?
I would start with a clean build, import the Site and then import some content from your live site, then you can see what needs to be done. But i would not install a Site on your current live site. That could get real messy
Ok thanks for taking a look David. I need to get off my current theme asap as I can't customise home page or category pages and it is driving me crazy! Perhaps I will just load GP Premium without a template and manually update the various pieces as I go. I was hoping to use sections instead of installing Elementor but if I can't use a pre-designed template I may need to go the elementor path..
You're welcome. Sorry to re-iterate, but please do look at an option for a staging server for making these changes. If you host can't accomodate then worth taking a look at a plugin option:
Okay, so I have upgraded the theme to GP Premium and want to create a section with a similar layout to the Catalyst theme site using Lightweight Columns. I have installed lightweight columns but can't for the life of me work out how to lay it out with the image, content and button as Catalyst has. Are you able to assist? Thanks.
awesome. so this is a method i use if i haven't added my content already:
1. Create a column, do the responsive settings and in the Content field, just add a simple line of text for filler.
2. Repeat this for each of your columns. Making sure you check the Last Column in Row for the final one.
3. In the editor you should now see the shortcodes for each column.
4. Replace the filler text with your image, text and button.
The alternative is to have all your content already marked up and copy and pasting that into each of the columns Content fields. Let me know :)
Ok, have worked it out - thank you! I think the last thing I am missing is Related Posts at the bottom of my articles. I can't find anything that will do this within GP - is there a plugin that plays nice with GP you can recommend?
Not something i use a lot, they can be extremely resource intensive. this article provides the pros and cons of some of the more popular ones. They should have no problem running on GP.
