Formatting Excerpt

Hi,
On blog archives is there any way to stop heading/sub-headings (e.g H2 tags) from being shown in the auto-generated excerpts?. Currently headings just become part of the excerpts paragraph text which looks a bit odd.
I have tried using the dedicated excerpt field but then I lose the read more text that I want.
