Hi there,

the Notify follow up replies option seen on this site is part of BBPress which is used to create the forum. To do this without a plugin would require considerable custom coding, you also have to consider that users may want to deactivate their subscription to this service, so it would make sense to use a plugin such as:

Sometimes a plugin is the best way to do things. At the end of the day they are just code as well, so finding a nice lightweight one that does what you need is the best route. 🙂
