Dispatch Template - Featured image

HI,
I am going to change my existing theme and move it over to generate press, dispatch as it matches my existing theme. So, I have two related questions.
What should be the ideal pixel size for the featured images and post images in dispatch template?
There is a possibility that my existing blog images may not be of the size that you advise. In that case, what can I do to overcome this?

Don't use anything above 1200px width as the content area itself doesn't exceed that size.
Anything between 400px to 1200px width should be fine as long as you can keep the file size small. (30-100kb only, for best performance)
