Create a new page template

We trying to create a new page template so we went to the single.php and cloned it from the GP Parent theme. We then created a new page and associated it with the new template. In the new page, we turned on sections and added some code into the new section.

When we try to access the url, the code we added into the template isn't triggering....but the section seems to be working.

1. Did I copy from the right template?
2. If I wanted to have this piece of code trigger with the content, is there a particular place in the code to look for?
3. Is there anything else that we'd need to set?
