Category and Post Pages

Hello,
I'm on a new adventure to build news sites using GeneratePress as it is IMHO the best theme out there to build from.
One of the first stumble blocks I have has to do with Category, Post and Tag Pages.
For me to build a long term soluition with a few as possible plugins/add-ons or page builders my plan was to use a Child Theme then copy the category and tag pages to the root. ( I think correct terminology would be adding Acrhive behind each).
For Category pages for a news site it only requires nicely aligned images, text, title, author, date and maybe display the category (all that post is in) on the image itself and make it link to the post inclusive of link on the image. Tag archive page would be the same.
For posts I would copy the single.php to the child theme directory and modify it there.
My quesiton is probably more in line with HOW BEST to do it wihtout adding a plugin for each requirement as they come up.
In an ideal world I would be able to select a template for a category so each can be different or the same. For posts add another template and change so that the defeault is that then it does not risk losing out on GP theme updates.
Pleaes let me know if child theme is the best route or how best I can achieve this to ensure the best use of GP.
Thank you in advance and I hope it all makes sense ;-)
Hi there,
unless you're making drastic changes to a template then there is little need to use a child theme.
The block ( and hook ) Element will allow you to insert content into parts of the theme, eg. social shares below the entry title:
https://docs.generatepress.com/article/block-element-overview/
And then you may want to check out the Block Element advancements that come with GPP 2.0

Theres some Videos on our YT channel showing just somethings it can do:
Hi David, thank you for the quick response.
My intial objective for posts is the title, author, image etc. the order of it and styling/positioning.
For category/tag archive pages the same and have it applied globally. BUT, I am going to take some initiative and watch all the videos first as it is great to see it in action opposed to asking you further questions before watching the videos at the very least.
Thank you for the information and I will report back when I have finished watching all the videos.
You're welcome. Let us know what you think!
