Branded theme Logo on home vs sub pages

In the branded theme the home page has an image under the logo in the header, therefore the logo needs to be white. On the sub pages of the theme the header is white and I would like to use our color logo. When I change the logo in site identity it changes the logo in both locations.
How do I get it to swap out as in the demo?

Looks like the home page is using the header element to merge. In that case you can use upload a custom logo for that specific page hero:

When I uploaded the file to Elements by editing the element that was there it did not change the logo to the transparent version. The display rule shows the location to be front page.
I tried changing it to the home page, but this changed the formatting of the home page to the look of the sub pages.
