Hi,
I know I can specify a word count for the post excerpts on archive pages, but because of word lengths, I usually end up with a variable number of lines showing. (ie. for some posts it will be 3 lines for some 4) Is there a way to have it simply always output a fixed number of lines or characters instead of words?

WordPress excerpt doesn't have that option unfortunately.
You could try using the more tag to fine-tune it though:
