So I checked it out and made a couple changes, but what I basically want is each archive in a "box" with the featured image right up to the side margins and taking up about 1/2 of the "box". The boxed area would be white which makes each post stand out a bit from the gray background of the page.

Can you link me to an example? Hard to picture with just words.

Here is a link similar to what I had with my other theme - although my photos did not have any white space on the top or sides. But I like either way as regards to the photos.

Okay. Just not sure how to set the staging site so it can be viewed. Right now it is unaccessible to anyone but myself. Do you happen to know how I would change that? Sorry! Kind of a newbie.
