Alpha Channel on background images

Is it possible to increase the opacity of certain images inside the website, or should I do that on a photo editor? I don't have a lot of experience with anything outside of Preview, which can do a few things for me, but I don't know how to make it change the opacity. Thanks for all the work you do on these plug-ins.
I would suggest doing that in a photo editor - while it's possible with code, it's a little more complicated.
