Looks like you were able to resolve it 🙂

For others reading this:

When no widgets are added into a sidebar widget area, GP will add some default widgets.

You can remove these by adding your own widgets to the area.

If you don’t want to add your own widgets to the area, you can remove the sidebar entirely: http://generatepress.com/knowledgebase/choosing-sidebar-layouts/
